Hiti — heat. “Shaped mittens that will keep your hands warm,” says the pattern. Védís Jónsdóttir’s mittens from Ístex’s Lopi 42 are knitted in the round from the cuff up with two strands of Plötulopi held together, at a slightly firmer gauge than usual, for warmth: black cosmos, with a band of spruce green stripes and six round spots across the upper hand. The left and the right mitten each have their own chart, with a thumb gusset at the inside of the wrist, in sizes S/M and L/XL.

Sizes
S/M and L/XL — 32 (36) stitches round the hand at 16 stitches to 10 cm, about 20 (22.5) cm (7¾″ (8¾″)) round (our calculation). The cuff rib is 5 (6) cm. The pattern prints no mitten length.
Gauge
16 sts × 22 rows = 10 cm (4″) in stocking stitch on 5 mm needles with 2 strands of Plötulopi — a little firmer than usual for Plötulopi, for warmth.
Needles
4 mm (US 6) double-pointed needles for the cuff rib
5 mm (US 8) double-pointed needles for the hand and the thumb
You will also need
Scrap yarn to hold the thumb stitches and a tapestry needle for the ends — the pattern uses both but does not list them.
How it is knitted
Knitted in the round from the cuff up with two strands of Plötulopi held together; the round begins at the inside of the wrist. The cuff is cast on loosely with 30 (34) stitches in black cosmos on 4 mm needles and knitted in K1, P1 rib for 5 (6) cm. On 5 mm the round is increased to 32 (36) stitches, and a thumb gusset is increased from the chart, at both ends of the round, to 42 (46). The 12 gusset stitches go onto scrap yarn, and the next round increases 1 stitch at the beginning and 1 at the end, back to 32 (36). The hand follows the chart: plain black cosmos, then the spruce green band — a round of single stitches, two solid rounds, six round spots, two solid rounds and a round of single stitches — then plain again, and the shaped top, decreased from the chart over 7 (8) rounds; the last stitches are drawn together. For the thumb, the 12 stitches from the scrap yarn and 2 picked up between gusset and hand make 14, knitted plain in black cosmos for 13 (15) rounds and decreased in two rounds. The right mitten is knitted the same way from its own charts.
