Good to know

Grein — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
Blue version: yes — Álafosslopi indigo blue (9959), light indigo (9958), light denim (0008), black heather (0005) and ash heather (0054) are all still made by Ístex. Our shop calls 9959 indigo, 0008 light denim heather and 0054 light ash heather, so go by the colour numbers. Grey green version: dark grey green (9986), grey green (9775) and light grey green (9761) are no longer made, and we have no kit for that version; black heather and ash heather still are.
Which size should I knit?
Six sizes, XS to XXL, with a chest of 92, 96, 98, 104, 110 and 114 cm all the way round. By our check, sizes S and M have the same number of body stitches, 128 — about 98½ cm at the pattern’s gauge — and XXL’s 152 stitches come to about 117 cm rather than 114; the other sizes match the printed chest to within 1 cm. The length to the centre front of the neck is 62 to 70 cm and the sleeves 47 to 55 cm. Compare with a sweater that fits well before you choose.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls, the same for both versions: the main colour (A) 5 (5, 6, 6, 7, 7) and one ball each of B, C, D and E — 9 (9, 10, 10, 11, 11) balls in all.
Which needles do I need?
4½ mm and 6 mm: 6 mm circulars, 40 and 80 cm, for the body and the yoke; a 4½ mm circular, 80 cm, for the hem rib; 4½ mm double-pointed needles for the cuffs and, by our reading, the neckband (the pattern says only “4½ mm needles” for it); and 6 mm double-pointed needles for the sleeves — the instructions use those, but the list leaves them out. The pattern prints the 4½ mm needles as US 6; 4½ mm is US 7.
Is there a kit?
For the blue version: our kit has this pattern and the yarn for the blue sweater in XXL — indigo ×7 and one ball each of light indigo, light denim, black heather and ash. There is no kit for the grey green version.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
Small things: the chest figures for S and XXL (see above); the 6 mm double-pointed needles missing from the list; the light grey squares in the yoke chart, which are not in the key, mark stitches already decreased — “no stitch” (our reading); and a few untranslated words (“13 sts og 18 rows” — og means and). The list leaves out stitch holders and a tapestry needle.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The sweater is. The blue jeans are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo of the blue sweater; a page with a small photo of the grey green sweater, the sizes, materials, gauge, the start of the instructions, both charts and the key; a page with the rest of the instructions; and Ístex’s back cover.
