Good to know

Frost — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
Black tweed (9975), light grey (0056), white (0051), black sheep (0052) and acorn (0053) are still made by Ístex. Beige tweed (9976), the main colour of the brown version, is no longer made; our beige tweed kit uses 9976 from our remaining stock. Our shop calls 0056 ash heather and adds “heather” to black sheep and acorn, so go by the colour numbers.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes — S, M, L, XL and XXL — with a chest of 95, 101, 107, 113 and 119 cm all the way round and 41 to 45 cm from the hem to the underarm. Sleeves: 49 to 53 cm for men, 45 to 49 cm for women. The pattern gives no total length.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls, the same for both colours: 5 (6, 6, 7, 7) balls of the main colour (A), 3 of colour B in every size and 1 (1, 2, 2, 2) of colour C — 9 (10, 11, 12, 12) balls in all. You also need a zipper with two slides and a cord for the hood.
Do I have to cut my knitting?
Yes. The body is knitted in the round with a purl stitch at each side of the centre front, all the way up the body and the yoke. When the knitting is done, weave in the ends but pull those next to the purl stitches through to the right side; then sew twice by machine with small straight stitches through each chain of purl stitches and cut between the sewn rows. The zipper is sewn in under the front edges with thread in a matching colour — first from the right side where the edge folds, then slip-stitched from the wrong side. The pattern gives no zipper length.
How is the hood made?
After the yoke, the purl stitches are bound off and the neckband is knitted back and forth in K1, P1 rib in colour B for 3 cm. The hood carries straight on in stocking stitch, back and forth: 8 stitches are added over the first two rows, an eyelet is made near each front edge, and stitches are added at the back three times. At 26 cm the top is shaped with short rows — a 13-stitch centre panel takes in the side stitches row by row. The 5-stitch front edge is folded to the inside and sewn down, and the cord is drawn through the two eyelets, which the pattern calls buttonholes.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few small things. Where body and sleeves are joined, the second sleeve is printed “K 40 (42) 43 (44) 46 (47) sts”; by our reading it is 40 (44, 45, 46, 47), like the first sleeve — that is what each sleeve ends with, and only those numbers add up to the printed 187 (203, 211, 219, 227). Under round 1 of the yoke chart the pattern prints “skip rnd size S”, so by our reading size S leaves out round 1 as well. The list leaves out stitch holders, a tapestry needle and a sewing machine.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The hooded cardigans are. The blue jeans and the dark trousers are not, and the zippers and cords are not included.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo of the brown version; a page with a small photo of both versions, the sizes, the materials for both colours, gauge, notes, the body, the sleeves, the yoke, the neckband, the hood, chart 1 and the key; a page with the finishing and chart 2, the yoke; and Ístex’s back cover.
