Good to know

Fjara (Lopi 30) — your questions, answered

Is this a knitting or a crochet pattern?
Crochet. The whole blanket is crocheted back and forth on a 10 mm hook, with single, half double, double and treble crochet.
Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Five of the eight are still made by Ístex: white (0051), wheat heather (9973), bordeaux heather (9961), grey heather (0057) and black tweed (9975). Fairy green (9984), ochre (0065) and grey green (9775) are not in Ístex’s current range. Our Fjara kit uses 9965 chartreuse green heather, 9971 amber heather and 9966 cypress green heather in their place — and 0059 black in place of black tweed, although black tweed is still made.
How big is it?
One size, 116 × 170 cm. It starts with 100 stitches; at the pattern’s gauge of 8 stitches to 10 cm that comes to about 125 cm, some 9 cm more than the printed 116 cm (our check), so crochet a swatch first. The pattern gives no row gauge — the rows are of different heights — and says to repeat the colour order until the blanket is long enough.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls: white (A) 5, wheat heather (B) 4, fairy green (C) 3, bordeaux heather (D) 3, and 2 each of grey heather (E), black tweed (F), ochre (G) and grey green (H) — 23 balls in all.
How are the waves made?
With stitches of different heights. Every third row is a wave row: three single crochets, a half double, a double, three trebles, a double and a half double, repeated, so the row rises and falls. The next wave row is the opposite — trebles where the last one had single crochets — so a hill sits over every valley. The rows between are plain single crochet. The pattern warns to keep the hills over the valleys, or the blanket will become crooked.
How do the colours change?
Every row is a new colour. The pattern prints the order for 36 rows — starting wheat heather, fairy green, grey heather, ochre, bordeaux heather, grey green, black tweed — and you repeat it until the blanket is long enough. It suggests ending with two rows of single crochet. The ends can be crocheted over as you go or woven in afterwards.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
Only small things. The note calls the tallest stitch treble crochet (tr); the rows write it “trc”. The pattern gives no edging and no washing instructions, and the printed width is less than the stitch count gives, as above.
Is this the Fjara from Lopi 25?
No. Lopi 25 has a different pattern called Fjara. This one is Lopi 30, no. 15, by Guðrún Ragna Sigurjónsdóttir.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The blanket is. The metal rail it hangs on is not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; a page with a small photo, the size, materials, gauge, notes, the colour order and all the instructions; a blank page; and Ístex’s back cover.
