Bylgja is Védís Jónsdóttir’s loose round-yoke pullover from Ístex’s Lopi 29, knitted in Léttlopi on 6.5 mm needles with bands of Einband — Icelandic laceweight, as the pattern calls it — knitted on the same needles, so they come out thin and see-through. The yoke and the lower sleeves have bands of purl ridges and long stitches, made by wrapping the yarn round the needle once, twice or three times and dropping the wraps on the next round. The body starts with a garter-stitch hem and is a little wider at the hem than at the chest; the neck and cuff edges are Einband stocking stitch, left to roll. Two colour versions — black, and violet with purple Einband — in sizes XS to XL. All four colours are still made.

Gauge
15 sts × 20 rows = 10 cm (4″) in stocking stitch with Léttlopi on 6.5 mm needles. The pattern says the sweater is knitted loosely, and to take care not to knit the Einband too loosely on the same needles.
Needles
6.5 mm (US 10½) circular needles, 40 and 80 cm — for the body, the yoke and the Einband edge at the neck
5.5 mm (US 9) circular needle, 80 cm — for the garter-stitch hem
4.5 mm (US 7) circular needle, 40 cm — for the K1, P1 rib at the neck
6.5 mm double-pointed needles for the sleeves
You will also need
Though the pattern’s list leaves them out, you need 2 stitch markers, stitch holders and a tapestry needle.
How it is knitted
The body is cast on loosely in Léttlopi on the 5.5 mm circular, knitted back and forth in garter stitch for 5 rows, then joined and knitted in the round in stocking stitch on 6.5 mm, with 2 stitches decreased at each side twice, 15 (15, 16, 16, 16) cm apart, so it is a little narrower at the chest than at the hem. The sleeves start with 14 rounds of Einband in stocking stitch on double-pointed needles, then a Léttlopi band of ridges and long stitches, 6 rounds of Einband and the same band again; they go on in plain Léttlopi, increased under the arm. Body and sleeves are joined for the round yoke, a 36-round chart with three decrease rounds, from 190 (200, 210, 220, 230) stitches to 76 (80, 84, 88, 92): the same band of ridges and long stitches, a band of Einband, a smaller band of ridges and long stitches, and Einband to the neck; the smaller sizes leave out marked rounds. The neckband is 5 rounds of K1, P1 rib in Léttlopi on 4.5 mm and 6 rounds of Einband stocking stitch on 6.5 mm, bound off loosely and left to roll. Last, the ends of the garter-stitch hem are sewn together and the underarm stitches grafted.
