Good to know

Blóm — your questions, answered

Which size should I knit?
Three sizes — 4, 6 and 9 — with a chest of 69, 78 and 86 cm, 24, 28 and 32 cm from the hem to the underarm, and sleeves of 26, 30 and 34 cm to the underarm. The pattern prints the sizes without a unit, so go by the chest measurement. The chest matches the body’s stitch count at the pattern’s gauge (our check).
How much yarn do I need?
Léttlopi in 50 g balls: garnet red (A, 1409) 6 (6, 7) and white (B, 0051) 2 in every size — 8 balls for sizes 4 and 6, 9 for size 9. Both colours are still made by Ístex, and our shop uses the same names.
Which zip do I need?
The pattern lists “Zip: 40-45-50 cm” — 40 cm for size 4, 45 cm for size 6 and 50 cm for size 9. It does not say what kind; the photo shows a red zip whose two halves come fully apart. The zip is sewn in by hand: first to the front ridge from the right side, then its edge is stitched down from the wrong side.
Is the front cut open?
Yes. Two purl stitches run up the centre front. When the knitting is done you sew two rows of small straight stitches by machine up each purl stitch, then cut between the two pairs of sewn rows. You need a sewing machine. Garter-stitch bands are then picked up along the cut edges, from the hem to the top purl row of the neckband.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few things. Chart 3 gives 209 stitches for size 6 at the start of the yoke; the text gives 210, and the join (31 + 42 + 64 + 42 + 31) and the later counts (170, 130, 90) only work from 210 — 210 is right. The body puts 7 (7, 8) underarm stitches on holders but the sleeves put 8 in every size, so in sizes 4 and 6 you graft 7 stitches to 8. The colour of the front bands is not given; in the photo they are garnet red. The neckband ends “K 1 row from WS, then K 5 rows from RS” without saying whether those 5 rows are stocking stitch or garter stitch. And the materials list leaves out the sewing machine, the stitch holders and the stitch markers.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; a page with the materials, sizes, gauge, the instructions for the body, sleeves, yoke and neckband, and the body chart; a page with the finishing, the sleeve and yoke charts and the colour key; and Ístex’s back cover.
