Ari (Lopi 30) — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Yes. All four are still made by Ístex: Léttlopi black (0059), white (0051) and dark grey (0058), and Einband white (0851). Our shop calls 0058 dark grey heather.
Which size should I knit?
Two sizes, S/M and L/XL, with a chest of 112 and 120 cm, 50 and 52 cm from the hem to the underarm, and sleeves of 49 and 51 cm. By our calculation the knitted body is 168 (176) stitches round without the two cutting stitches — about 105 (110) cm at the pattern’s gauge — and the garter-stitch front borders are sewn on after cutting; the pattern doesn’t say how the printed chest is measured. Compare with a cardigan that fits you well.
How much yarn do I need?
Léttlopi in 50 g balls: black (A) 8 (9), white (B) 1 (2) and dark grey (C) 1 (2). Einband in 50 g balls: white (D) 4 in both sizes.
How are the yarns used?
The ribs, body, sleeves, pockets, borders and collar are one strand of black Léttlopi and one of white Einband knitted together on 6 mm needles — that gives the black-and-white marl. The three pattern bands are knitted with single strands of white and dark grey Léttlopi on 6.5 mm. Above the yoke band the photo shows the marl again; the text doesn’t say to change back (our reading).
How are the collar and front borders made?
Separately, as two long strips of garter stitch — 8 stitches, plus 3 edge stitches in stocking stitch that cover the seam. Each strip is knitted to 50 (52) cm and then increased at the neck edge into the collar, up to 31 stitches (the 3 edge stitches are bound off after the first 5 cm), then knitted straight until it reaches the middle of the back neck. The left strip has six buttonholes. After the front is cut, the two collar halves are grafted at the back and the strips are sewn on.
Do I have to cut my knitting?
Yes. The body is knitted in the round with a purled stitch at each side of the centre front. You sew twice by machine through each line of purl stitches and cut between the seams; the borders are then sewn on over the cut edges, and sewn down on the inside to hide the machine stitching.
How are the pockets made?
Two linings, 18 stitches by 9 cm, are knitted first. On the round after the body band, each lining takes the place of 18 stitches on each front, 8 stitches in from the centre; those 18 stitches wait on a holder and are knitted up at the end into an 8-row garter-stitch pocket edge.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few things. The sleeve says to increase “every 7th rnd, total 9 times” to 65 (69) stitches; from 49 (53) after the chart that would give 67 (71), so the 9 counts the increase in chart round 11 — 8 more after the chart (our reading). At round 11 of the yoke chart the text changes to 6 mm needles and back-and-forth knitting, although the note says the pattern is knitted on 6.5 mm. The left border says to knit it “as long as the left one” — it means the right one. The list leaves out stitch holders, a sewing machine and thread, and a tapestry needle.
Is this the Ari from Lopi 29?
No. Lopi 29 has a different pattern called Ari. This one is Lopi 30, no. 17, by Guðrún Ragna Sigurjónsdóttir.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The cardigan is, with its buttons (not included). The black T-shirt, the grey trousers and the book are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; a page with a small photo, the sizes, materials, gauge, notes and the instructions; a page with the end of the finishing and the three charts — body, sleeve, and the yoke for each size — with the key; and Ístex’s back cover.
