Alda is a striped Léttlopi scarf from Ístex’s Lopi 29, designed by Védís Jónsdóttir — the pattern calls it the “sea foam” scarf. It is knitted back and forth in garter stitch over 26 stitches, in 47 stripes of ten colours. In most stripes the yarn is wrapped once, twice or three times round the needle after some stitches, and the wraps are dropped on the next row, leaving long loose stitches that form wavy lines. One size, 15 × 130 cm. The pattern prints no amounts — it says “use leftovers”. Three of the ten colours — 1410 orange, 9264 golden and 1413 lilac — are no longer made. Another Ístex pattern, in Lopi 25, is also called Alda.

The pattern gives no gauge. It is knitted in Léttlopi on a 4.5 mm needle, 26 stitches wide, to 15 × 130 cm.
Needles
4.5 mm (US 7) circular needle, 60 cm — the scarf is knitted back and forth on it
You will also need
A tapestry needle for weaving in the ends — the pattern’s list names only the needle.
How it is knitted
26 stitches are cast on loosely in garnet on a 4.5 mm needle and knitted back and forth in garter stitch (every row knit) for 5 rows. Then come two edge stripes — garnet and orange — each with one row in which the yarn is wrapped twice (garnet) or once (orange) after every stitch but the last, the wraps dropped on the next row. The main part is 43 stripes, each of one or two 4-row patterns: pattern 1 makes two groups of long stitches across the row, pattern 2 three groups where pattern 1 is plain — one between pattern 1’s two groups and one near each edge — so the wavy lines alternate. In each group the yarn is wrapped round the needle once, twice, three times, twice and once after five stitches in a row, and the wraps are dropped on the next row; the two rows after it are knitted. The colour order is written out in full. The scarf ends with two edge stripes like the first — violet, then lagoon — and is bound off knitwise from the wrong side.
Design: Védís Jónsdóttir — pattern from Lopi No. 29 (no. 16), Ístex.
