Alafoss lopi yarn is the perfect choice for warm, heavy-weight garments that breathe. This bulky yarn is a classic choice for knitting authentic lopapeysa sweaters. In fact, alafoss lopi (spelled as álafoss in Icelandic) is the oldest type of yarn still in production in Iceland. It’s also one of the thickest types of Icelandic yarn, and it’s roughly as thick as three strands of plötulopi.
Use this yarn to hand knit durable, warm outerwear or blankets and stay cozy throughout the winter season. Alafoss lopi is easy to knit and super strong, so it will last for decades with proper care. Like all Icelandic wool, alafoss lopi is naturally water-repellant and insulating with soft breathability.
Our alafoss lopi yarn is made in Iceland with 100% pure Icelandic sheep’s wool. Istex is 80% farmer-owned and has been the top producer of Icelandic knitting yarn since 1896. The sheep are set free to graze in the highlands for most of the year in order to produce clean wool with lopi’s unique long-fiber quality.
