Young woman with long fair hair holding an open black notebook and a pen in front of a red corrugated-iron house with a white door and a white stair railing, wearing A in the pattern’s purple version — a long plum heather sweater in plain stocking stitch, its hem, cuffs and neck rolling at the edges. The black trousers, the notebook and the pen are not part of the pattern; the LOPI logo is printed in the corner

Why you'll love it

  • Three strands as oneThree strands of unspun Plötulopi are wound softly together and knitted as one thick yarn — 6½ stitches to 10 cm on 15 mm needles, 8 on 12 mm.
  • Shaped by the needlesThe lower body is knitted on 15 mm needles and its top 12 cm on 12 mm, on the same stitches, so the sweater is wider at the hem than at the chest (our reading of the gauges).
  • Decreases instead of a chartThe yoke has no colour pattern: every other round is a decrease round of 8 stitches — by our reading at the edges of the front and back and in the middle of each sleeve — written out for each size.
  • Two looks from one patternThe purple sweater is three strands of plum heather; the green one mixes one strand each of marsh heather, spruce green and sea green.

Good to know

A (Lopi 26) — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours?
For the purple sweater in the photo, yes: Plötulopi plum heather (1428) is still made by Ístex. For the green version, marsh heather (1420) and spruce green (1421) are still made, but sea green (1422) is no longer made, so the green cannot be knitted exactly as printed. Our shop calls 1421 spruce green heather, so go by the colour numbers. The PDF has no photo of the green version.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes, S to XL, with a chest of 95, 100, 105 and 110 cm all the way round — exactly the body’s stitches at the 12 mm gauge (our check). The lower body is knitted on 15 mm needles on the same stitches; at the 15 mm gauge that comes to about 117, 123, 129 and 135 cm round the hem (our calculation, not printed). The sweater is long: 50 to 53 cm from the hem to the underarm, measured flat, and the sleeves are 44 to 47 cm. Compare with a sweater that fits well before you choose.
How much yarn do I need?
Plötulopi in plates of about 100 g. Purple: 4 (5, 5, 6) plates of plum heather. Green: 2 plates each of marsh heather, spruce green and sea green in every size — 6 plates. The pattern says to begin by winding three strands softly together — three of plum heather for the purple sweater, one of each green for the green — and to knit them as one.
How is the yoke shaped?
With decreases only. After the body and sleeves are joined you knit 6 (6, 6, 8) plain rounds, then a decrease round and a plain round in turn. Each decrease round takes away 8 stitches (the last one in size L takes 6), each marked with a stitch marker: by our reading, one at each edge of the front and of the back, and a pair in the middle of each sleeve, either side of 4 stitches. Each round is written out with the stitch counts for every size, down to 36 (36, 38, 40) stitches for the neck.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
Two things, by our check. The yoke says “Work next 20 (22) 24 (26) rnds as follows”; the rounds written out below it come to 24 (26, 28, 30) by our count. The stitch counts printed after each decrease all add up. And in decrease round 5 the second sleeve reads “K2 tog, K 4 sts, K2 tog, K 4 (5) 6 (6) sts”, where all the other decrease rounds have the two knit counts the other way round; in size S that is the same, and in sizes M, L and XL it places that round’s second knit-2-together 1 (2, 2) stitches away from the line of the others (our reading). The list leaves out the markers, stitch holders and a tapestry needle.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The purple sweater is. The black trousers, the notebook and the pen are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo of the purple sweater; a page with a small copy of that photo, the sizes, materials, gauge, notes and most of the instructions; a page with the last yoke decreases, the neck and the finishing; and Ístex’s back cover.
