Questions people ask before they buy

Who is Stekkjarstaur?
The first of the thirteen Yule Lads, the sons of the trolls Grýla and Leppalúði. The National Museum of Iceland has him coming down to the farms on 12 December, and says that in the old days he would try to suckle the ewes in the farmers' sheep sheds.
What does the name mean?
A stekkur is a sheep pen with a closed-off corner for the lambs, and a staur is a post. English versions vary: Sheep-Cote Clod is the common one, and the booklet in the box calls him Sheep Worrier. The 1932 poem by Jóhannes úr Kötlum, which settled the thirteen names, gave him legs as stiff as posts, so the milk raid never went well.
Why is he sitting on a sheep?
He is after her milk. In the old story Stekkjarstaur crept into the sheep sheds to drink from the ewes, and his stiff legs made hard work of it. The figure shows him in the middle of the attempt.
Why is his name sometimes spelled Stekkjastaur?
Both spellings are in use in Iceland, with and without the second r. The base of this figure and the maker's booklet say Stekkjarstaur, so that is what we use.
Is he a toy for children?
The story is for children. The figure is a painted display piece, not a toy, so he belongs on a shelf where they can see him and adults can reach him.
Can I order just this one figure?
Yes. A single figure pays shipping, and you see the exact amount at checkout before you pay. Orders over $149 to the US, Canada and Europe ship free.
