Description

Meat Hook, Ketkrókur in Icelandic, is the last Yule Lad but one. He comes on 23 December, St Thorlak's Day, when the smoked lamb for Christmas used to be cooked, and in the old stories he fished for it down the chimney with a long stick.

Brian Pilkington's design for this hanging ornament shows him crouched inside a red ring lettered KETKRÓKUR, a joint of meat under one arm and his iron hook in hand. He is about 7.5 cm (3 in), painted by hand front and back, and packed in his own window box with an English booklet. Meant for hanging, not handling. Also part of the set of all 14.

Is that a ham he is holding?

In the story it is smoked lamb, which the National Museum of Iceland calls traditional Icelandic Christmas fare. On the ornament it is a brown joint with a pink cut face, so it could pass for either.

Is he the last Yule Lad?
