Description

Stúfur is the third of the thirteen Icelandic Yule Lads and the short one of the family. He comes on 14 December, and what he is after is the burnt scraps stuck to the frying pan. In English he is called Stubby or Shorty.

This hand-painted figure, designed by Brian Pilkington, has him standing with his hands behind his back and his chin up, smiling under a white beard. He wears a dark waistcoat with gold buttons, striped sleeves and yellow socks, and STÚFUR is lettered on the red base.

At about 9 cm he is a small figure, boxed behind a clear window with an English booklet. Keep him as a display piece rather than a plaything.

Who is Stúfur?

The third of the thirteen Yule Lads, due on 14 December. The National Museum of Iceland calls him rather short in the leg and adds that he is sometimes known as Pönnuskefill, the pan scraper, because in the old days he tried to pinch the scraps left in the frying pan.

What does Stúfur mean, and is he Stubby or Shorty?

Both are used. A stúfur is a stub, the piece left when something is cut short, and the word is also a pet name for a small boy. The booklet in the box says Shorty; many English tellings say Stubby.

Why isn't he holding a pan?

This figure shows the lad, not the theft. He stands empty-handed with his hands behind his back. If you want one of the kitchen thieves with the evidence in hand, his brother Þvörusleikir comes with two spoons.

How small is he really?

About 9 cm, or 3.5 inches. The maker's measurement and ours agree. He is a small figure, and if he is a present it is worth knowing that before the box is opened.
