Chocolate balls with a soft liquorice centre, finished with a dusting of liquorice powder instead of a sugar shell. So the first thing you get is dry, dark liquorice on the tongue, then the chocolate rounds it off, then more liquorice from the middle. It's the bolder cousin of the white Snjóboltar — same construction, no sweet coating to hide behind.

Made in Iceland by Sambó, one of the liquorice names Icelanders grow up with. If you want to know what lakkrís means to an Icelander, this bag is a straight answer.

How strong is the liquorice?

Stronger than Þristur, where caramel hides it; this bag hides nothing. The powder on the outside is dry and sharp for a second, the milk chocolate softens it, and the centre is a soft liquorice with a salty edge from the salmiak (ammonium chloride) in the recipe.

What is the difference from Snjóboltar?

Same ball underneath, milk chocolate around a liquorice centre, but Snjóboltar wear a white sugar shell and these wear liquorice powder. That one change is the difference between a sweet bag and a bold one.

What does Sambó call them?

Superboltar, “super balls”, or Pipar perlur, “pepper pearls”, though there is no pepper in the recipe. The bag itself says Lakkris Powder, by Sambo Iceland.

Does chocolate travel well in summer?
