The Icelandic Tail Cap

The Icelandic tail-cap or skotthúfa is a typical part of the Icelandic national costume and have been used for centuries in Iceland. Originally it was only worn by men, but starting in the 18th century women started to wear it. Icelandic Tail Cap is a beanie with a long tail hanging on the side of the wearer’s head. As Iceland is a cold country, these hats are generally knitted and made from wool. The end of the tail has tassels making it more decorative.
The tail cap completes the look of the aprons because all women hold their heads high when such a headdress has been placed on there head.

The tail cap is made of black velor with silky black and even threads. It is easy to attach and it sits well on the head.

The Icelandic tail hat comes in a beautiful purse with a small tail hat tassel hanging from it.

The Icelandic National Costume ‘Þjóðbúningurinn’ symbolizes Iceland´s independence and is essential to the country´s identity.
There are five different types of women's national costumes; Skautbúningur, kyrtill, faldbúningur (“costume with hemline”), peysuföt and Upphlutur and are traditional daily wear of Icelandic women in olden times.
