Islandia Antique Map Poster 1590

The first real stand-alone map of Iceland. Published by Abraham Ortelius in 1590 in the fourth supplement to the atlas Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (1570).
Icelandic Vintage wall art and Canvas Decor shows a map of Iceland in the N-Atlantic from 1590. The Vatnajokull glacier is missing on the map and instead there are all sorts of mythical creatures, sea monsters, circling the island.
The map was drawn using information on place names and outlines of the country provided by the Icelandic bishop Guðbrandur Þorláksson (1541-1627). On the back of the map the various sea monsters around Iceland are briefly explained. Many of them are given Icelandic names, such as Hroshualur (G) (Horse whale) and Seenaut (K) (Sea cow), which belong to Icelandic folklore. Other depicted creatures are distorted sea mammals, such as Rostunger (N) (Walrus), Steipereidur (L) (Blue whale) and Staukul (M) (Bottlenose dolphin).
