No. 40, adapted by Védís Jónsdóttir, is fawn — a mid grey in the photo — with rolled edges instead of rib, black sheep motifs over bands of vanilla, field, straw, old rose and mauve in the yoke, and a stand-up rib collar, in sizes XS to L. No. 41 is white, with light gray ribs and a black heather zigzag border above them, a black heather and white yoke on light gray and a folded neckband, in sizes XS to XL with sleeve lengths for women and for men. All three of No. 41’s colours are still made; six of No. 40’s seven — fawn (9367), vanilla (9718), field (9719), straw (9720), old rose (9024) and mauve (9215) — are no longer made.

What you get

The knitting pattern in English (PDF), emailed right after purchase — nothing is posted

Both pattern numbers — No. 40, the fawn sweater, and No. 41, the white one

No. 40 in sizes XS to L; No. 41 in XS to XL, with sleeve lengths for women and for men

The shared yoke chart, with No. 40’s band colours beside it, and No. 41’s border chart, with a key for each

Yarn and needles are not included. No. 40: the body is cast on with 128 (136, 144, 152) stitches in fawn on the 6 mm circular and knitted in plain stocking stitch to 42 (44, 46, 47) cm, which includes about 2 cm that rolls up at the lower edge; there is no rib and no border. The sleeves are cast on with 32 (34, 34, 36) stitches on 6 mm double-pointed needles, knitted plain for 3 cm and increased every 6th round to 52 (54, 56, 60) stitches, to 39 (41, 41, 42) cm. Body and sleeves are joined for the round yoke — 200 (208, 216, 232) stitches. In the yoke chart the motifs are black sheep, and the stitches between them change colour in bands — vanilla, field, straw, old rose, mauve, fawn and vanilla again — each new colour spliced in at a random point in the round. The collar is 7 cm of K1, P1 rib in fawn on 4.5 mm double-pointed needles, with one last round of rib in black sheep, cast off in rib and not folded. No. 41: the body is cast on with 116 (122, 130, 136, 144) stitches in light gray on the 4.5 mm circular, knitted in K1, P1 rib for 6 (6, 6, 7, 7) cm and increased to 128 (136, 144, 152, 160). On 6 mm comes a 10-round border from chart 1 — black heather zigzags on light gray and white — then white to 38 (40, 42, 43, 44) cm. The sleeves start the same way on 4.5 mm double-pointed needles, get the same border and are increased every 8th round for women or every 9th for men, to 52 (54, 56, 60, 62) stitches. Body and sleeves are joined for the round yoke — 200 (208, 216, 232, 240) stitches — and the same chart, in black heather and white on light gray, gives black spikes rising from the white, black zigzags, a band of small white diamonds and black and white stitches up to the neck. The neckband is 8 cm of K1, P1 rib in light gray on 4.5 mm double-pointed needles, folded in half to the inside and slip-stitched. In both, the 43-round yoke chart has five decrease rounds, down to 75 (78, 81, 87, 90) stitches, the smaller sizes leave out marked rounds, and the underarm stitches are grafted.

Design: Jóhanna Hjaltadóttir; No. 40 adapted by Védís Jónsdóttir — patterns from Lopi No. 18 (nos. 40 and 41), Ístex.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1662/1057/files/lopi18-40-cover-1_1a2f4f91-4ba9-42d6-a24a-c1f6d1b048a8.jpg?v=1791007483
