Both are knitted in Álafosslopi in the round from the bottom up and share the same charts: a border above the K1, P1 rib at the hem and cuffs, and a round yoke of points, small diamonds and blocks. No. 32, the pullover, is forest heather with motifs mostly in white and partly in black heather, and a folded rib neckband. No. 33, the cardigan, is light beige with motifs mostly in black heather and partly in white; its front is cut open and finished with separately knitted button bands, and it closes with 6 or 7 buttons. Five sizes, XS to XL, with sleeve lengths for women and for men. Forest heather (0014), the pullover’s main colour, is no longer made; the other colours still are.

What you get

The knitting pattern in English (PDF), emailed right after purchase — nothing is posted

Both pattern numbers — No. 32, the pullover, and No. 33, the cardigan

Five sizes, XS to XL, with sleeve lengths for women and for men

The border and yoke charts for each, and a small neckband chart for No. 33, each with its key

Yarn and needles are not included. A tapestry needle for grafting the underarms and sewing down the neckbands and facings.

How it is knitted
Both are knitted in the round from the bottom up on 6 mm needles, with the same 12-round border chart and the same 43-round yoke chart. No. 32, the pullover: the body is cast on with 118 (124, 130, 136, 140) stitches in forest heather on the 4½ mm circular, knitted in K1, P1 rib for 6 (6, 6, 7, 7) cm and increased to 132 (138, 144, 150, 156); on 6 mm comes the border, then forest heather to 38 (40, 42, 43, 44) cm. The sleeves are cast on with 28 (30, 30, 32, 32) stitches on 4½ mm double-pointed needles, knitted in the same rib and increased to 42 (42, 42, 48, 48); on 6 mm they get the border, with 1 stitch increased at each end of its last round, and then 1 stitch at each end of every 8th round for women or every 9th for men, 4 (5, 6, 5, 6) times, to 52 (54, 56, 60, 62). They are knitted to 41 (43, 43, 45, 45) cm for women or 46 (48, 48, 50, 50) cm for men. Body and sleeves are joined for the round yoke — 204 (210, 216, 234, 240) stitches — and the yoke chart, with four decrease rounds, takes it down to 68 (70, 72, 78, 80); sizes XS to L leave out marked rounds — XS seven, S five, M four and L two — and XL knits all 43. The neckband is 8 cm of K1, P1 rib on 4½ mm double-pointed needles, decreased on the first round to 54 (54, 54, 56, 58) stitches, cast off loosely, folded in half to the inside and slip-stitched. No. 33, the cardigan: the welt is cast on with 133 (139, 145, 151, 157) stitches in light beige on the 4½ mm circular and knitted back and forth in K1, P1 rib, with a knit stitch at each edge and a buttonhole at 2 cm, to 6 (6, 6, 7, 7) cm. The 8 stitches at each end go on holders for the front bands; the rest are increased by 16, to 133 (139, 145, 151, 157), and on 6 mm 2 stitches are cast on that are purled every round at the centre front. The body is joined into a round, gets the same border and is knitted in light beige to 38 (40, 42, 43, 44) cm. The sleeves are knitted as for No. 32, except that the increase to 42 (42, 42, 48, 48) stitches comes in a knit round after the rib and one more stitch goes on each underarm holder. The yoke is joined with a purl stitch at each front edge — 201 (207, 213, 231, 237) stitches — and the yoke chart, drawn here with the purl edge stitches and leaving out the same rounds, takes it to 69 (71, 73, 79, 81). Two rows of machine stitching are sewn in the centre of each column of purl stitches, and the front is cut between them once the button band is knitted. The bands are the 8 rib stitches from the holders with 3 stitches of stocking-stitch facing, knitted on a 4½ mm needle until, slightly stretched, they reach the neckline; each is sewn on and its facing slip-stitched over the cut edge. The buttonhole band — the right front for women, the left for men — gets buttonholes at the marked button places. The neckband is knitted back and forth on 4½ mm across the bands and the yoke, decreased to 71 (71, 71, 75, 75) stitches: the bands stay in rib while the yoke stitches get a small 7-row chart of black heather crosses with a white centre. Then, in light beige, a knit row from the wrong side makes the foldline, the 8 band stitches at each end are cast off, and 6 rows of stocking stitch make a facing that is folded back along the foldline and slip-stitched. In both, the underarm stitches are grafted.

Based on designs from The Handknitting Association of Iceland, adapted by Védís Jónsdóttir — patterns from Lopi No. 18 (nos. 32 and 33), Ístex.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1662/1057/files/Askur_Embla_traditional_Icelandic_sweater_knitting_kit_52357a61-a17d-4551-9964-1597c16d81f0.jpg?v=1791034572
https://icelandicstore.is/products/lopi-18-no-32-33-matching-yoke-sweater-and-cardigan-knitting-pattern
