No. 23 is light beige with acorn, white, black sheep and oatmeal; no. 24 is light ash with dark grey, white, black heather and ash (our shop’s names — the leaflet prints only the colour numbers). Both have a deep yoke — dark points rising from the body, a wide band of white star shapes with small dark ovals between them, and white rays up to a folded ribbed neckband — and a matching border above the hem and cuff rib. The same leaflet has a plain one-colour hat by Guðrún Jónsdóttir and patterned mittens by Kristbjörg Jónsdóttir in either version’s colours. Mittens: 4.5 mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles
The sweater’s list has no 6 mm double-pointed needles, but the sleeves change to the 6 mm “twin pin” with only 42 (48, 48) stitches — about 32 (37, 37) cm round (our calculation), too few for a 40 cm circular; by our reading the 6 mm double-pointed needles from the hat and mittens’ lists are easier there
The pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”

You will also need
Stitch holders for the underarm stitches (in the sweater’s list); and, which the pattern uses but does not list, a tapestry needle for grafting, sewing down the neckband and weaving in, and for the mittens a short length of contrast yarn for the thumb opening and 2 stitch markers.

How it is knitted
Knitted in the round from the bottom up. The body is cast on with 130 (136, 140) stitches in colour A on the 4.5 mm circular for 6 (7, 7) cm of K1, P1 rib, then increased to 144 (150, 156) on 6 mm. An 11-round border from chart 1 comes next — white with dark points rising into a dark band, then colour A points rising into the main colour — and the body goes on in M to 42 (43, 44) cm. The sleeves are cast on with 30 (32, 32) stitches in A on 4.5 mm double-pointed needles for the same rib, increased to 42 (48, 48) on 6 mm and given the same border; then you change to M and, in the pattern’s words, “at the same time” increase 1 stitch after the first and 1 before the last stitch of the round on every 7th round for women or every 8th round for men, 8 (7, 8) times, to 58 (62, 64) stitches, and knit on to 43 (45, 45) cm for women or 48 (50, 50) cm for men. Body and sleeves are joined for the round yoke — 216 (234, 240) stitches — and chart 2 takes it to the neck: first 13 rounds — dark points, a band in colour A, and white with small dots — with 20 (24, 16) stitches decreased evenly on round 13, to 196 (210, 224); then a 14-stitch repeat with its decreases drawn in the chart, to 56 (60, 64) stitches. Size M leaves out rounds 30, 33, 38 and 39, and size L rounds 33 and 39, so the chart is 39 (41, 43) rounds. The neckband is knitted in A on 4.5 mm double-pointed needles — 56 (58, 60) stitches, 8 cm of K1, P1 rib — cast off loosely, folded in half to the inside and slip-stitched down. The underarm stitches are grafted. The hat is knitted in the round on 6 mm double-pointed needles in plain stocking stitch, with no rib, then decreased in three steps and drawn together. The mittens start with 2 rounds of K1, P1 rib in A and rib in the main colour to 7 cm; the hand is knitted on 6 mm with a thumb opening knitted over contrast yarn, chart 3 — 13 rounds of small motifs in colours A, C and D on white — and a top decreased at both sides to 8 stitches.

Design: Kristbjörg Jónsdóttir (sweater and mittens) and Guðrún Jónsdóttir (hat) — patterns from Lopi No. 12 (nos. 23 and 24), Ístex.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1662/1057/files/L12_24_Audur_Light_Grey_Icelandic_wool_sweater_Knitting_Kit_6e31d20b-d37f-4d8f-a3e3-a906630c01cb.jpg?v=1791035501
https://icelandicstore.is/products/lopi-12-no-23-24-round-yoke-sweater-hat-and-mittens-knitting-pattern
