It is black heather with a white and light grey yoke — small white motifs, a light grey band that zigzags into white, a white band and a speckled line, slanting white waves, small white and grey motifs, and short white stripes up to a folded neckband — and a white and grey border above the ribbed hem and cuffs. Page 3 of the leaflet has a plain black heather hat by Guðrún Jónsdóttir, the one she wears in the photo. One colour version, five sizes from XS to XL. The leaflet prints only the colour numbers (the names here are our shop’s); all three colours are still made.

What you get

The knitting pattern in English (PDF), emailed right after purchase — nothing is posted

Five sizes, XS to XL

Sleeve lengths for women and for men

The plain hat on page 3, by Guðrún Jónsdóttir

Two charts — the border above the rib and the yoke — with a colour key

Yarn and needles are not included. The body is cast on in black heather (M) with 118 (124, 130, 136, 140) stitches on the 4½ mm circular and knitted in knit 1, purl 1 rib for 6 (6, 6, 7, 7) cm; on 6 mm, 14 (14, 14, 14, 16) stitches are increased evenly, to 132 (138, 144, 150, 156), chart 1 — a 9-round border — is knitted, and the body goes on in M to 38 (40, 42, 43, 44) cm. The sleeves are cast on with 28 (30, 30, 32, 32) stitches on 4½ mm double-pointed needles, ribbed for 6 (6, 6, 7, 7) cm and increased evenly to 42 (42, 42, 48, 48) on 6 mm; the same border is knitted, then M — “and at the same time” 2 stitches are increased at the underarm every 7th round for the women’s length or every 8th round for the men’s, 6 (7, 8, 7, 8) times, to 54 (56, 58, 62, 64). The sleeves are knitted to 41 (43, 43, 45, 45) cm for women or 46 (48, 48, 50, 50) cm for men. Body and sleeves are joined for the round yoke, 204 (210, 216, 234, 240) stitches, and the 43-round yoke chart takes it to 78 (78, 82, 86, 90): beside rounds 16, 21, 30 and 40 the chart prints how many stitches to decrease, and on rounds 27 and 38 it marks a knit-2-together in each repeat. Sizes XS to L leave out marked rounds — XS knits 37 rounds, S 38, M 40, L 41 and XL all 43. The neckband is knitted in M on 4½ mm double-pointed needles: decreased evenly to 54 (54, 56, 58, 60) stitches, 8 cm of knit 1, purl 1 rib, bound off loosely, folded in half to the inside and sewn down. The underarms are grafted. Hat: knitted in the round in black heather on 6 mm double-pointed needles — 63 (66) stitches in stocking stitch for 21 (22) cm, with no rib; the crown is decreased in three steps (knit 1, knit 2 together all round; 3 plain rounds; knit 2 together all round; 2 plain rounds; then knit 2 together until 6 stitches remain) and the yarn is drawn through the last stitches.

Design: Astrid Ellingsen (sweater) and Guðrún Jónsdóttir (hat) — pattern from Lopi No. 12 (no. 14), Ístex.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1662/1057/files/Alafosslopi_wool_sweater_Hrafnhildur_12_14_8dd8b8de-d44c-4bc8-a1b7-556f711fc128.jpg?v=1791032756
