The cardigan is knitted in the round from the bottom up, with two purl stitches at the centre front that are machine-stitched and cut open (a steek); it has moss-stitch edges, a small border above the hem and cuffs, and a folded neckband. Two colour versions for both: pink (pink, black heather and white) and bluegreen (glacier blue, white and sun yellow). Cardigan sizes 1, 1–2, 2–3 and 3–4 years; the hat is one size, 2–4 years. Sun yellow (1411) is no longer made; the other four colours are.

What you get

The knitting pattern in English (PDF), emailed right after purchase — nothing is posted

A cardigan (no. 8) and a hat (no. 9), each with its own materials list

Two colour versions — pink and bluegreen

Cardigan sizes 1, 1–2, 2–3 and 3–4 years; hat 2–4 years

Three charts — cardigan border, cardigan yoke and hat

Yarn and needles are not included. Stitch holders, a sewing machine for stitching the steek before it is cut, sewing thread to match for the zip, the pom-pom templates and a tapestry needle — the instructions use them, but the lists leave them out.

How it is knitted
Cardigan: knitted in the round from the bottom up, with two purl stitches at the centre front — a steek — that are machine-stitched and cut open at the end. The body is cast on in A with 105 (113, 121, 129) stitches on the 3½ mm circular and knitted back and forth in moss stitch for 4 rows; on 4½ mm, 2 purl stitches are cast on and the body is joined into a round of 107 (115, 123, 131). The 6-round border chart comes first, then A. At 10 cm from the cast-on edge 2 stitches are decreased at each side marker, and again at 15 (16, 17, 18) cm — 8 stitches in all, to 99 (107, 115, 123) — and the body is knitted to 18 (20, 22, 24) cm. The sleeves are cast on in A with 28 (28, 32, 32) stitches on 3½ mm double-pointed needles and knitted in moss stitch for 4 rounds, then get the same border on 4½ mm; in A, 4 stitches are increased evenly, and then 1 stitch after the first and before the last stitch of the round every 6th (5th, 7th, 7th) round, 5 (6, 5, 6) times, to 42 (44, 46, 48), and the sleeve is knitted to 20 (22, 24, 26) cm. Body and sleeves are joined in A for the round yoke, 163 (171, 179, 187) stitches, and the 29-round yoke chart, with five decrease rounds, takes it to 64 (67, 70, 73); the smaller sizes leave out marked rounds. For the neckband the purl stitches are bound off and one round in A on 3½ mm decreases to 55 (57, 59, 61) stitches; it is then knitted back and forth — 4 rows of moss stitch, a knit row from the wrong side to fold on and 3 rows of stocking stitch — and bound off loosely. The underarms are grafted; the steek is machine-stitched twice through each column of purl stitches and cut between; the zip is sewn in by hand under the folded front edges, and the neckband is folded to the inside over the top of the zip. Hat: cast on in B with 80 stitches on the 3½ mm circular and knitted in knit 1, purl 1 rib for 20 rounds; on 4½ mm come 2 knit rounds, the 9-round chart and 10 rounds in A. The top is shaped with nine decrease rounds, 5 rounds apart, from 80 stitches to 8, which are drawn together. The rib is folded in half, and a pom-pom in C, made on round templates about 4 cm across with a 1.5 cm hole and rolled between the hands to full it a little, is fastened to the top.

Design: Védís Jónsdóttir — pattern from Lopi No. 28 (nos. 8 and 9), Ístex.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1662/1057/files/L28_0809_Kria_11-585x798_4c8f7471-9b7f-4088-9511-3a97b1ac3dca.jpg?v=1791027342
