Stitch holders for the underarm stitches, a sewing machine and thread in a matching colour for the steek and the zipper, and a tapestry needle for grafting — the instructions use them, but the pattern’s list leaves them out.

How it is knitted
Knitted in the round from the bottom up, with a purl stitch at each end of the round at the centre front — the steek — which is machine-sewn and cut open for the zipper at the end. The body is cast on in B with 161 (177, 193, 209) stitches on the 3½ mm circular and knitted in knit 1, purl 1 rib for 2 cm; the round is joined only after the rib, when 2 purl stitches are cast on, giving 163 (179, 195, 211) stitches on 4½ mm. Chart 1 comes first — a 19-round border (sizes M and L leave out round 14) — then plain A to 40 (42, 44, 46) cm. The sleeves are cast on in B with 44 (46, 48, 48) stitches on 3½ mm double-pointed needles, ribbed for 2 cm and given the same border on 4½ mm; then in A 2 stitches are increased at the underarm in the first round after the border and every 7th (7th, 7th, 6th) round, 12 (13, 13, 14) times in all, to 68 (72, 74, 76), and the sleeve is knitted to 49 (50, 52, 53) cm. Body and sleeves are joined in A for the round yoke, 259 (275, 291, 307) stitches, and the 54-round yoke chart, with five decrease rounds, takes it to 99 (105, 111, 117); sizes M, L and XL leave out marked rounds. The neckband is knitted in B on 3½ mm: the purl stitches are bound off, one round decreases 24 (26, 28, 30) stitches, and the rest is worked back and forth — 3 cm of knit 1, purl 1 rib, a purl row from the right side for a ridge, then 2.5 cm of stocking stitch in A, bound off loosely. The underarms are grafted and the front is machine-sewn twice through each column of purl stitches; the cardigan is rinsed by hand and laid flat to dry, then cut open between the sewn rows. The zipper is sewn in under the front edges, and the neckband is folded to the inside at the purl ridge and sewn down over the end of the zipper — or the stocking stitch is left to roll.

Design: Védís Jónsdóttir — pattern from Lopi No. 28 (no. 12), Ístex.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1662/1057/files/L28_12Hlekkur_Black_Full_Zip_Wool_sweater_Knitting_Kit_21_d3d7e815-2181-4a6a-8339-57a1155273b3.jpg?v=1791027942
