Védís Jónsdóttir’s mittens from Ístex’s Lopi 28, knitted in the round in black Léttlopi: a long cuff that tapers to the wrist, a wrist ribbed on one half of the round, and four buttons sewn in a line on each mitten as decoration. One colour, one woman’s size. Also a short length of scrap yarn in another colour for the thumb, which the list leaves out.

How it is knitted
Knitted in the round on four double-pointed needles. 44 stitches are cast on with 4 mm needles for 5 rounds of K1, P1 rib; then, on 4.5 mm, the long cuff is knitted in stocking stitch and tapered with four decrease rounds, 10 rounds apart, from 44 to 28 stitches. At the wrist, half the round is ribbed and half knitted for 5 rounds — needles 3 and 4 are ribbed on the right mitten, needles 1 and 2 on the left. The hand is increased twice, to 36 stitches, and 6 stitches are knitted with scrap yarn for the thumb (on needle 3 for the right mitten, needle 2 for the left). The hand goes on for 14 rounds, is decreased to 32 and knitted 13 rounds, or to the length you want, before the top is shaped with paired decreases. The thumb is picked up around the scrap yarn, 13 stitches, and knitted 15 rounds before its top. Last, the buttons are sewn on, four in a line on each mitten, as in the photo.

Design: Védís Jónsdóttir — pattern from Lopi No. 28 (no. 17), Ístex.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1662/1057/files/lopi28-happ-1_8071490d-c083-48a3-a9d3-fa63e87d85e7.jpg?v=1790992422
