fletir-colour-block-sweater-knitting-kit
Fletir — Colour-Block Sweater Knitting Kit

Fletir — Védís Jónsdóttir’s colour-block sweater from Ístex’s Lopi 38, knitted with one strand of Plötulopi and one strand of Einband held together on 8 mm needles, so every colour is a soft blend of two yarns. The lower body is blue, the sleeves are deep red, and the top of the body and sleeves and the whole round yoke are rust-amber, with a dark grey-green neckband. The yoke has no colourwork. The deep ribs at the hem and cuffs are knitted back and forth and keep a small open slit — on purpose. The pattern’s Plötulopi forest (0014), used only with the dark grey Einband for the neckband and the last two rounds of the yoke, is no longer made; this kit has Plötulopi 0484 forest green in its place, so the neckband will look greener than in the photos (our estimate).

Included

Icelandic Plötulopi and Einband wool yarn — yarn for the largest size is included, so every size is covered

Knitting pattern in English (PDF) — emailed right after purchase

ADDI knitting needles — only if you choose the kit with needles

Plötulopi — 100 g plates · sizes S (M L XL)
A 1432 Winter Blue Heather — 1 (1 2 2)
B 1427 Jasper Red Heather — 1 (1 2 2)
C 1426 Dark Amber Heather — 1 (1 2 2)
D 0484 Forest Green (in place of 0014 forest) — 1 (1 1 1)

Einband — 50 g balls · sizes S (M L XL)
E 0010 Denim Heather — 2 (2 3 3)
F 9165 Brick — 3 (3 4 4)
G 9103 Dark Grey Heather — 1 (1 1 1)

Sizes

S

M

L

XL

Chest

93 cm
36½″

100 cm
39¼″

107 cm
42¼″

113 cm
44½″

Length to underarm

40 cm
15¾″

42 cm
16½″

44 cm
17¼″

46 cm
18″

Sleeve length to underarm

44 cm
17¼″

45 cm
17¾″

46 cm
18″

47 cm
18½″

Gauge
12 sts × 17 rows = 10 cm (4″) in stocking stitch on 8 mm needles, with one strand of Plötulopi and one of Einband held together.

Needles used in the pattern (included when you choose the kit with needles)
8 mm (US 11) circular needles, 40 and 80 cm — the 80 cm for the body and the start of the yoke, the 40 cm for the top of the yoke (the pattern says 40 and 60–80 cm)
6.5 mm (US 10½) circular needles, 40 and 80 cm — the 80 cm for the body rib, knitted back and forth; the 40 cm, by our reading, for the sleeve ribs (also knitted back and forth) and the neckband
8 mm (US 11) double-pointed needles for the sleeves

Not included
Stitch holders (or scrap yarn) for the underarm stitches, and a tapestry needle for grafting the underarms and weaving in the ends.

How it is knitted
Knitted throughout with one strand of Plötulopi and one of Einband held together, so every colour is a blend of two yarns. The body is cast on with 113 (121, 129, 137) stitches in winter blue heather + denim heather on the 6.5 mm circular, and the 8 cm rib is knitted back and forth — knit 1, purl 1 on the wrong side, plain knit on the right side — so it keeps a small open slit at the left side. Then it is joined on the 8 mm circular and knitted in the round in stocking stitch. 3 cm below the underarm come 2 rounds of dark amber heather + denim heather, then dark amber heather + brick to 40 (42, 44, 46) cm. The sleeves start the same way in jasper red heather + brick: an 8 cm rib knitted back and forth, then in the round on 8 mm double-pointed needles, increased 5 times at the underarm, with the last 3 cm in dark amber heather + brick. Body and sleeves are joined on the 8 mm circular — the first and last stitch of each piece are knitted together, so no gaps show in the loose fabric — and the round yoke is plain stocking stitch in dark amber heather + brick, narrowed by five decrease rounds from a chart. The last two chart rounds are forest green + dark grey heather, and so is the neckband: 5 cm of the same rib, knitted in the round on 6.5 mm, single layer, bound off in rib. The underarms are grafted.

Design: Védís Jónsdóttir — pattern from Lopi No. 38 (no. 16), Ístex.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1662/1057/files/lopi38-fletir-cover-1_5cc8757c-e4da-4250-9ef0-7cdcb5a48385.jpg?v=1791001966
