Stitch holders for the band, pocket and underarm stitches, a sewing machine and thread for the steek, and a needle for sewing on the bands, the pocket linings and the press studs and for grafting — the pattern’s list leaves these out.

How it is knitted
Knitted in the round from the bottom up, with a purl stitch at each end of the round at the centre front — the steek — which is machine-sewn and cut open at the end. The body is cast on loosely in B with 137 (143, 149, 155) stitches on the 4½ mm circular and ribbed back and forth for 2 cm; 6 stitches at each end go on holders for the front bands, 2 purl stitches are cast on, and the body is joined into a round of 127 (133, 139, 145) on 6 mm. Chart 1, a 12-round border, comes first, then plain A to 46 (48, 50, 52) cm. There the two pocket linings — 19 stitches each, knitted separately in stocking stitch for 18 cm — are knitted in: after the purl stitch and 11 (12, 14, 15) stitches at each front, 19 body stitches go on a holder and the lining stitches are knitted in their place. The body goes on to 72 (74, 76, 78) cm. The sleeves are cast on in B with 30 (30, 32, 32) stitches on 4½ mm double-pointed needles, ribbed for 5 cm and increased evenly to 36 in the last round, given the same border on 6 mm, then increased at the underarm in A every 8th round, 2 (3, 4, 5) times, to 40 (42, 44, 46), and knitted to 46 (47, 48, 49) cm. Body and sleeves are joined for the round yoke, 175 (181, 187, 193) stitches, and the 37-round yoke chart, with four decrease rounds, takes it to 61 (63, 65, 67); sizes S, M and L leave out marked rounds. The underarms are grafted, the front is machine-sewn twice through each column of purl stitches and cut open between the sewn rows. Each front band — the 6 held stitches in rib, with 3 stitches cast on in B for a stocking-stitch facing — is knitted back and forth until, slightly stretched, it reaches the neckline, then sewn to the front, its facing sewn to the inside over the machine stitching. The neckband is knitted in B across both bands and the yoke — one row with 6 stitches decreased over the yoke, then 8 rows of rib — and bound off in rib. The held pocket stitches get 4 rows of rib in A, the linings are sewn to the inside, the cardigan is rinsed by hand and laid flat to dry, and the press studs are sewn to the front band.

Design: Astrid Ellingsen, adapted by Védís Jónsdóttir — pattern from Lopi No. 28 (no. 13), Ístex.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1662/1057/files/Astrid_Long_Cardigan_Sweater_with_pockets._knitting_pattern_cba4b2bd-87ab-49b7-85e4-daedeadf8d6c.jpg?v=1791027791
